…..

Sumptuous and luxurious are just two of the words that come to mind when you think of made to measure curtains. These draping beauties captivate an audience as you enter a room; they command attention and are the finishing touch to an interior design scheme that you just can’t be without.
Curtains are like a suit, the perfect fit will last a life time and always catch admiring glances but the wrong fit will look cheap and shabby. Therefore Made to measure curtains is the only choice for the discerning home owner. Your curtains will be made to the precise measurements of your window, no length will be too long and no drop will be too short. You can design your very own custom made curtains, that will be unique to you and will be the envy of all those who view them.
Some feel daunted when it comes to ordering Made to measure curtains. With all these options how does one choose a pair of curtains? I often hear. Well start at the beginning, find a fabric that you just absolutely love, a fabric which makes you heart skip a beat, that you lie in bed at night thinking about and that will put a smile on your face every time you enter your room and see it hanging proudly on your windows.

The secret to choosing your dream fabric is selecting one that will complement the rest of your interior design scheme. Choose it in isolation and your curtains will jar with the rest of your room. So if you have a carpet, a sofa or wallpaper that must stay, use this as your basis for selecting your fabrics. Draw colour from it that should be incorporated into your curtains, if it is very patterned and floral, then choose a plain, a subtle self-pattern or a stripe in a complementary hue for your curtain fabric.

If however you have a blank canvas, finding a fabric that you are crazy about can be a great way to get inspiration for the rest of your room. Use your curtains as your starting point and then choose furnishings and paint to complement your curtains. Remember it is much easier to get a paint mixed to match a curtain, than to get a fabric made to match a paint!!

Next on your to do list is to choose a style of curtains. The options are massive here but do not be scared, the style of curtain you choose will depend on the look you are trying to achieve. If your home is more traditional for example you may choose curtains with a pelmet. Traditional style homes suit more layering on your windows and a more ornate style of curtains. If however your home is more modern or you prefer less fuss you may choose curtains on a pole without a pelmet, for a sleek, straight lined look.

There are numerous heading you can choose between when it comes to the top of your curtains. Pencil pleat heading is your basic curtains top. A traditional three inch pencil pleat tape, which is sewn to the top of your curtains and is, gathered in with the strings in the tape to create its pleats. A soft unfussy, casual look this is one of the most well recognised curtains headings. You will need double the width of your pole in your curtains, to create a nice fullness to your curtains.
Tab curtain heading is another laid back, casual style of curtain heading. Created by making straps from your curtain fabric which the pole slips through. You can have square shaped or V shaped tabs for added detail. This style of curtains required less width than other styles of curtains, with just one and half times the width of your pole required, as the straps fan out widely across the pole. This style of curtains is therefore a little bit more economical and easy to fit. Perfect curtain choice for a relaxed sitting room, a kitchen or even child’s room.

Pinch pleats otherwise known as French pleating is one of the most luxurious pleating for curtains. Created using a stiffener the 3 pleats are hand sown into the tops of the curtains to create a much tailored finish. The curtains are sewn and pleated to fit the exact size of your curtain pole, giving you a perfect fit and finish. These pleats can be created with a 6 inch stiffener or for a more modern and longer pleat you can use ten inch stiffener. This style of curtain heading is very luxurious and has a timeless appeal.

Another equally opulent style of curtain heading is the goblet. Again created using stiffener, this time to hand sewn into cylindrical tubes, which are stuffed to create a beautiful gobleting effect at the top of the curtain. This is one of the most traditional and luxurious of the curtain styles.

For those who want a more contemporary style of curtain then the eyelet curtain heading is ideal. Sleek, modern and non fussy, eyelet curtains create clean straight lines that are coveted for the contemporary home. They are made by punching metal rings into the head of the curtain. The pole then slips through these rings, making these curtains very easy to fit. These curtains can only be used with a curtain pole and not a track. They hang very straight and therefore often do not require tie-backs.

With the heading selected for your curtains next thing to choose is the lining. One of the great things about made to measure curtains is that they allow you to use better quality linings, giving your curtains more body, more heat retention and helps protect them from sun damage. Sateen lining is the most common lining used in made to measure curtains. It is generally ivory in colour and is made from cotton, it is ideal for the majority of curtains in most rooms of the house, protecting the curtains from the sun and adding weight to the curtains. Black out lining is a popular choice for bedrooms. Despite its name black out lining is not black but actually ivory in colour as well, so will look the same as the rest of the linings in your house from outside. Its black out colour comes from the thin rubberised coating this lining has on its inside, which cannot be seen on the back of the curtains but prevents light travelling through the curtains. Interlining (combo) is another option when it comes to lining for you’re made to measure curtains. This lining has a quilted fleece lining combined with the sateen lining, again it looks to the back of your curtain the same as all your other linings in your home but the fleece layer gives the curtains extra body, weight and feeling of luxury. This lining is particularly good choice for lining silk or light weight curtains, to give them an extra dimension of grandeur. Highly recommended for this who love hint of glamour in their home.

So with the splendid world of curtains broken down and the mysteries and myths dispelled why not get yourself a beautiful pair of made to measure curtains.
